The RCSC, or the Red Cross Society of China, is a humanitarian, social relief organization. It focuses on helping the refugees in times of conflict and assisting disaster-hit victims.

The Origin Of RCSC

Red Cross Society of China was founded on March 10, 1904, and is formerly known as the Shanghai International Red Cross Committee. The founders are Chinese political leaders and businessmen, specifically Sheng Xuanhuai, a Chinese tycoon. It was Shen Dunhe, a tea merchant, who led the committee along with Xuanhuai.

Shen mainly leaned towards the Red Cross organization due to its neutrality status, which allowed Chinese relief teams to help civilians during the Russo-Japanese war. The tea merchant formed the Red Cross organization by involving wealthy Chinese and renowned westerners living in China.

As the Russo-Japanese war came to an end, the RCSC expanded all over the country, offering peacetime relief as well. Whenever there were famine, floods, fire and the outbreak of civil war, RCSC aided civilians.

Red Cross International Committee officially recognized the RCSC in 1912. Moreover, it joined the International Federation in 1919 and was one of the first members.

The Establishment Of The Republic Of China

The government passed the Act of Administrative Rules and Procedures. The law renamed the society as the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China. This society still exists today and is located in Taiwan.

During the Second Sino-Japanese war, the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China was immensely active. It had modern ties with foreign organizations and received invaluable medicines from different parts of the world.

The Outcome After The Year 1949

the Chinese Civil war, the government announced that the Red Cross Society of the Republic of China was the only humanitarian organization in the country.

The Communist Party of China reorganized the society in Beijing and admitted itself to the International Federation in 1950. It renamed the organization as the Red Cross Society of China.

The RCSC has helped in several natural as well as artificial disasters since the time it is functioning.

• Disaster Relief

  RCSC has assisted victims in typhoons, hurricanes, floods, and snowstorms with medical aid, food and shelter. During the 2015 Tianjin explosion, the Red Cross Society of China helped victims and offered shelter, food and water.

• Health care

  Throughout the country, RCSC has established various hospitals and offers different healthcare systems. Moreover, they also carry out camps and seminars about awareness of various diseases.

• First Aid

  RCSC has employees well trained in first aid. A nationwide emergency number, 999, was assigned to RCSC to offer ambulance and first aid services.

• Blood donation

  According to international standards, the RCSC assists the government medical departments and develops blood donation systems.
